Malta
Álvaro Malta (1931-2018) began his career as a bass singer in December 1949 in the São Carlos Choir, Lisbon, Portugal, and, in June 1951, he performed as a soloist in Mozart's Requiem, at the Igreja de São Domingos. In November 1952, he debuted as an opera singer, playing the roles of "Oficial" and "Escrivão" in Inês Pereira, by Ruy Coelho, after Gil Vicente. He had his first contact with music at the age of six, playing the mandolin. Later, he began to study sacred music and Gregorian chant. He practiced medicine at the Alfredo da Costa Maternity Hospital, a profession he always combined with opera.
